Lower Manhattan

9/11 memorial

Posted by M&A on April 29, 2017

Until now we’ve used our NYC pass for 2 attractions (Top of the Rock and The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum) so only one left. We’ve decided to use it for something that can’t be called an attraction but was recommended by many people and somehow felt mandatory. 9/11 museum. 9/11 is one of the events that even though happened 16 years ago is still vivid in our memory. If there’s any popularity ranking of important dates in the recent history of the world, I’d bet that this one is in the top 5.

The museum obviously takes the area of where the world trade center was, but there are some parts that were quite ingeniously designed. There are 2 main sections in the place where the twin towers stood. The one we’ll remember for sure is the section of the museum where events of that day are described and documented almost a minute by minute. From the time when the 4 airplanes took off until they crashed and the aftermath. It took us over 2h to walk it through and probably we could spend there even more time. It goes without saying that it was very emotional experience to be there.

What is also very impressive are the water fountains in the places where the twin towers used to stand with names of the victims engraved on them.

We headed down to grab some Mexican food and on the way there we saw the famous Wall Street bull surrounded by hundreds of people (we didn’t even try to come closer to rub its balls;-)).

After late lunch we went to a ferry that goes to Staten Island - main reason to shoot good shots of Manhattan and have a closer look on the Statue of Liberty. The ferry was loaded with people mainly b/c it’s free of charge - and you must know there are not many attraction in NYC that you will get for free… Whole journey back and forth took us 1.5h.

We chilled in the Battery Park for about an hour and then met with Judyta and Piotrek in the Irish Pub close to the Financial District to share our impressions of NYC and have few drinks.

As we were quite far away from our accommodation we’ve decided to take the city bikes again on our way back. Not the smartest move after few beers but we’ve managed to arrive home safely.
